Connecting a Laptop direct to the ONT

If we have tested your FTTP circuit and the diagnostics results show that your ONT (OpenReach Box) is connected, but your router is not connected, and you have power cycled your router and checked cables, we will ask you to connect a computer to the ONT box directly in order to eliminate your router. This article shows you how to connect a Windows 8 or Apple Mac computer with an Ethernet port to the FTTP service via a PPPoE connection.
Remember to which port on the ONT your router is connected, then unplug the cable from the ONT. Connect the Ethernet port on your computer to the Ethernet port your router was using on the ONT, but do not use the same cable, use a new Ethernet cable.

Creating a PPPoE connection on a Windows PC:

  1. First open Network and Sharing Center. To do this, press the Windows key on your keyboard to open the Start menu (Metro) and type ‘Network’.
  2. Click Settings on the right.
  3. Click the Network and Sharing Center icons.
  4. The Network and Sharing Center will open. Click Set up a new connection or network.
  5. Select ‘Connect to the Internet’ and click Next
  6. Click Broadband (PPPoE)
  7. Enter your Swift Internet FTTP user name and password then click Connect.
  8. Once connected, check for Internet access by browsing to https://swiftinter.net/ip
  9. Report findings to our support team.

Creating a PPPoE connection on an Apple Mac:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network .
  2. Click the Add button + at the bottom of the list on the left, and on the pop-up menu, choose the interface PPPoE, and on the Ethernet drop down list choose your Ethernet Interface
  3. Click the PPPoE service in the left hand window and enter your Swift Internet FTTP username and password which were provided when your FTTP connection was made live.
  4. If you want to use the PPPoE status icon to connect or disconnect from the Internet, or to open Network preferences, select “Show PPPoE status in menu bar”.
  5. Click Advanced to set additional options, and add  DNS server IP address
    8.8.8.8
    1.1.1.1
    then click OK.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Once connected, check for Internet access by browsing to https://swiftinter.net/ip
  8. Report findings to our support team.
