The Big Switch Off: 3 Dates You Need to Know

Confused about the Big Switch Off? You’re not alone. According to a survey by National Business Communications, 72% of companies admitted that while they had heard of the initiative, they didn’t know how it’d affect them or when it’d take place.

Thankfully, we’re here to help. Keep reading as we briefly explain what the Big Switch Off is and share three important dates for your calendar.

The Big Switch Off is coming: Are you prepared?

The Big Switch Off is the date when BT Openreach moves from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Essentially, your landline connection will no longer be held hostage to old-fashioned copper wires. Instead, it’ll be powered by broadband, which is much faster and easier to access.

To prepare for the transition and minimise disruption, it’s helpful to know a few key dates:

  • On the 5th September 2023, providers stopped selling broadband and phone packages that relied on PSTN.
  • BT originally planned the Big Switch Off for the 31st December 2025. However, this has been pushed back. Unfortunately, there were several serious incidents in 2023 where telecare devices and personal alarms stopped working, suggesting that adequate safeguarding wasn’t in place for vulnerable populations.
  • The new date for the Big Switch Off is 31st January 2027. If you haven’t found a new provider and package by then, you may experience issues with your communication services, payment portals and data storage systems.
